STATEMENT ON THE PROMOTION, PROTECTION AND FULFILMENT OF SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS

BY THE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL ADVISORY GROUP (STAG) AND GENDER AND RIGHTS ADVISORY PANEL (GAP)

15/03/2017

The Scientific and Technical Advisory Group (STAG) and the Gender and Rights Advisory Panel (GAP) together make up an independent body of scientists from research and development in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

Our Director, Dr Emma Fulu, is a signatory to the below statement expressing concern for the increase in backlash in SRHR.

There have been significant gains around SRHR over the last three decades, particularly for women and girls living in low- and middle-income countries. However, the goals for SRHR made for the Millennium Development Goals remain unfinished, and have been carried over to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals agreed by UN Member States. Further, current global trends are trumping advancements in the area. Greater investment and dedication is needed in the development of scientifically accurate evidence through rigorous research and the development of norms and standards to guide the provision of safe, effective and acceptable sexual and reproductive health programmes for individuals everywhere.
