Violence against children in Timor-Leste and Consequences on Adult Health and Exposure to Adversity Evidence Brief: Preventing Sexual Violence Against Children

Commissioned by the Australian Government’s Nabilan Program, Equality Institute analysed baseline survey data to better understand violence against children (VAC) in Timor-Leste and its impacts across the life course. Findings confirmed that VAC is widespread and has long-term links to poor health outcomes and future experiences of violence. One priority area identified through this research was the urgent need to address sexual violence against children (SVAC).

This evidence brief draws on a global evidence review by Together for Girls and Equality Institute to inform SVAC prevention strategies in Timor-Leste. Building on the INSPIRE framework, the review categorises approaches from around the world according to their effectiveness and relevance.

Three key focus areas are suggested to guide the development of context-specific strategies in Timor-Leste, helping policymakers, practitioners, and donors to strengthen prevention and response efforts for both boys and girls.

The land we live and work on always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land. We pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and acknowledge the ongoing leadership role of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities in preventing violence against women. We also acknowledge Traditional Custodians of the lands where EQI works around the world.
